Lukaku joined the club as an 18-year-old, but his dream was quickly dashed when he was moved to another team, and he never had a chance to make it at Stamford Bridge.
Lukaku stated on the Chelsea website today that this isn't the first or even second time they've tried to re-sign him. Lukaku claims Chelsea tried to re-sign him TWICE before this summer, but both times were unsuccessful.
“I knew I would improve as a player so it was just about timing,’ he explains about returning to Stamford Bridge.
“I had two opportunities to come back, in 2016 and 2017, but it didn’t happen for various reasons.”
Lukaku returned to Chelsea for a rumoured club record cost of £97.5 million on August 12, 2021, a decade after joining the club for the first time. Lukaku has now surpassed Neymar as the most expensive footballer of all time, with a total transfer cost of over £285 million.
