Sterling has battled for consistency in recent months for Pep Guardiola's side, and he failed to impress in Saturday's goalless draw with Southampton, extending his worrisome goal drought to just two in his last 22 appearances for City.

Sterling's failures at club level, according to the Telegraph, have cast doubt on his long-term future at the Etihad, despite the winger having reached the final two seasons of his contract.

Barcelona has been linked with a loan transfer for Sterling in recent weeks, but any such agreements – even on a temporary basis – appear highly improbable given the Spanish club's current financial problems.

Following the acquisition of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa, Sterling will have to compete for regular first-team action this season, with the likes of Ferran Torres, Riyad Mahrez, and Gabriel Jesus also vying for spots in the front three.
