LIGUE 1 - Marseille: Jorge Sampaoli praises William Saliba
Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli has hailed Arsenal-owned William Saliba as a ‘future great of French football’ after an exciting start to the defender’s loan stint back in Ligue 1.
Saliba arrived at the Emirates with huge expectations on his shoulders following a £27 million transfer from Saint-Etienne in 2019, but the 20-year-old star has failed to live up to his price tag and is still yet to make a senior team appearance for the Gunners.
The youngster has played every minute of his side’s top-flight campaign so far and Jorge was full of praise for his loan signing.
"He’s a top player at his position. We were lucky to get him on loan, it wasn’t simple," he told reporters.
"He’s great at marking, but good bringing the ball out too. He’s a future great of French football, he’s very good at starting plays. He’s adapted to a three at the back well, and his performances are linked to the team’s, which likes to play from the back."
