Antonio Conte is due to meet Tottenham players today after putting the finishing touches to a deal to become the club's new manager, according to The Athletic

It is understood the Italian has agreed a deal to manage Spurs on an 18-month contract with the option to extend. He is set to sign the contract around lunchtime today and lead training this afternoon.

On Monday morning Tottenham sacked Nuno after only four months in charge. Talks were held between chairman Daniel Levy and managing director of football Fabio Paratici over Nuno's dismissal on Sunday. The decision was then communicated to Nuno at Tottenham’s training ground the following morning.

The Athletic revealed shortly afterwards that Conte was the leading contender to succeed him.

Conte, who previously won the Premier League title with Chelsea, was also a contender to replace Jose Mourinho in north London earlier this year.

Conte, 52, talked in detail about his ambitions and his plans, as well as how he would get the players fitter, impressing Daniel Levy, Fabio Paratici and the rest of the Premier League club’s hierarchy. But Conte had second thoughts about succeeding Mourinho and by early June talks collapsed. Why exactly he pulled out remains unclear.

The two parties however reentered into talks following Nuno’s dismissal, with Conte now set to make a return to English football.
