Yannis Lagha, a 17-year-old Lyon midfielder who was called up by both the Algeria and France U18 teams this week, has chosen to play for Algeria, according to RMC Sport.

Lagha was selected in both squad lists as the two countries were due to face each other twice at the U18 level over the international break. The midfielder has already represented Algeria at the U17 level and will now continue with the same country.

Although it was "gratifying" to have been the topic of interest from French football officials, a member of the Lyon player's entourage claimed that it was a "logical and natural" option for him to continue playing for Algeria.

“But most of all, it makes sense that he continue to wear the Fennecs [Algeria national team] shirt with pride, having joined the 2004 generation last year. There is no reason to create a controversy around a young player like him.”

After a good start to the season, in which he was the leading scorer in the local U19 divisions, the French federation ramped up its attempts to have Lagha play for France.
